Technology arrives
From its earliest years, the Library was investing in technology and emerging online services, extending the reach for information and research resources beyond the shelves.
Between 1991 and 1999, Bond University Library embraced technologies that transformed how information was managed and accessed. Integrated library systems, networked databases, online catalogues and emerging digital research tools laid the foundations for a connected, technology-enabled library, positioning Bond to take advantage of the digital opportunities that would define the decades ahead.

Throughout its history, Bond University Library has been characterised by caring and dedicated staff. Coupled with these attributes has been a long-standing, positive relationship with IT services.
After (co)winning the inaugural VALA Travel Scholarship in 1990 and embarking on detailed interviews at key universities in North America, I became aware that Bond University was truly ahead of most other universities at that time in terms of IT infrastructure, especially networking. The Library was able to capitalise on this when embarking, for example, on the installation of its first integrated library system. Subsequent digital endeavours have clearly built on this strong foundation, which, hopefully, will continue to provide exciting new services.

Key moments
In 1991, the Library implemented an advanced integrated library management system, SEA-URICA, running on a Digital RISC computer. Designed to support up to 64 simultaneous users, the new system brought together acquisitions, cataloguing, circulation, serials management and the online public access catalogue (OPAC) into a single platform. It also offered storage and retrieval of data that other systems on the Australian market did not, such as image databases -- Achievement, No. 38 1991, March.
By 1994, technology was becoming increasingly visible to library users. The Library upgraded to a newer version of the URICA system, introducing improvements to the online catalogue and allowing borrowers to view their own library records electronically. Staff also expanded access to networked CD-ROM databases, enabling multiple users to simultaneously search valuable information resources. -- Bond University Library Update, Issue 2 1994.

Behind the scenes, document delivery staff began trialling commercial online databases such as FirstSearch and Citadel to obtain research materials from overseas, reflecting the Library’s growing reliance on digital tools to connect the Bond community with information beyond its physical collections. -- Bond University Library Update, Issue 1 1994.
