Digital expansion and major renovations
A decade of transformation. Between 2000 and 2009, Bond University Library underwent significant digital expansion, physical renewal and organisational change.
​
Through major renovations, investment in innovative learning environments, the introduction of collaborative spaces, and the growth of digital services, the library repositioned itself for the future of higher education.
This decade saw the Library and IT Services join in the Information Services portfolio.

Newly installed high performance Sunray terminals.
2001
Bond University Library and the School of Information Technology were awarded an Academic Equipment Grant from Sun Microsystems, Inc. As part of the $116,000 grant, 25 high performance Sunray terminals were installed in the Library. Seven additional computers were added to the Law Library.

EndNote launch event at Bond University Library.
2003
Members of the Bond Community gathered to celebrate the collaborative efforts of the Library, Information Technology Services and the Research Committee in bringing EndNote to the University. EndNote is a software package to assist staff and students to manage and organise references for their papers and create bibliographies quickly and easily. The launch was held at a cocktail party hosted by the Library in the Loggia on Level 6 of the Arch Building on 27th March 2003. The John and Alison Kearney Law Library was officially opened by the Commonwealth Attorney-General, the Hon. Philip Ruddock.

Key moments
In 2004, the Library migrated to a new integrated management system with a stronger focus on academic library requirements.
"Director, Library Services, Gulcin Cribb said the Ex Libris product, Aleph 500 will be one of the critical systems for delivering quality library services to support teaching, learning and research for the Bond University community." -- Bond University Journalism Students. An integrated service desk staffed by both Library and IT Service Desk staff handled enquiries covering computing support, resetting passwords, information literacy and finding books on the shelves. While this was the most visible change, business processes, service frameworks and other technology projects and collaborations were also changing.

Gulcin Cribb, Director of Library Services
"Gulcin Cribb, the new Director of Library Services (...) commenced duties on the 17th September 2001. Before arriving at Bond, Gulcin was Executive Manager, Physical Sciences and Engineering Library Service at the University of Queensland. (...) Started in 2003, coming from Griffith University and bringing many years of experience in customer service areas in tertiary libraries. Paul White, Law Librarian
"Paul, appointed as Law Librarian in 2006, studied a Bachelor of Arts at the University of New England in Armidale, NSW before completing his postgraduate library studies at the Queensland University of Technology. Grace Saw, Director of Information Services
Commenced in January 2009, Dr Saw had previously worked in academic libraries across Australia and New Zealand. Prior to her appointment at Bond, she was Acting Associate Director (Information Resources) at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and before that, Executive Manager of the Physical Science and Engineering Library Service at the University of Queensland Library.

Gail White, Manager, Information Resources
Commenced in the early 2000s, leading acquisitions and serials management. Later held the position of Information Resources Librarian, which was later reclassified as a management role.

Antoinette Cass, Manager, Scholarly Publications and Copyright
Commenced in the mid 2000s. Held the position of Copyright Coordinator, E-publications Coordinator and Policy Officer, before the management role was established.

Lyn Moore, Manager, Customer Services
Commenced in the 1990s and held several roles in customer services and document delivery, including Supervisor Customer Access Services, before the management role was established.

Main Library
On 9 October 2009 the Library was re-opened after being extensively renovated with funds provided through the continuing generosity of Drs John and Alison Kearney.

The Library was renamed in honour of their contribution and dedication to Bond University from its very beginning. Their portrait, completed by Paul Newton, hangs at the entrance of the wonderful light and airy space which reflects the environment of south-east Queensland.

Multimedia Learning Centre
Neil Balnaves AO and The Balnaves Foundation made a significant donation to transform the Bond Art Gallery into the Balnaves Foundation Multimedia Learning Centre (MLC).
Opened in May 2008, the MLC offers collaborative study spaces and the latest digital technology. In recognition of the MLC’s unique design features it was awarded the 2009 Australian Institute of Architects (Qld Chapter) GHM Addison Award for Interior Architecture for Wilson Architects.
