Foundations and architecture
This era represents the creation of the Library as a core part of a new university. The focus was on establishing services, collections, leadership and infrastructure to support future growth.
The Main Library's landmark space in the iconic Arch building, with views of the lake, soaring ceilings and proximity to the quadrangle distinguished it as a central part of the University's design and identity, and suggests it was intended to be far more than just a storage space for books.
Situated within the Faculty of Law, the Law Library underscored the close relationship between legal scholarship and access to specialised information, creating a dedicated environment where students, academics and practitioners could engage with the foundations of legal research.
Early donations and acquisitions helped establish collections that would become essential resources for students and academics, before the proliferation of online resources.

Key moments
"This huge U-shaped, archway building was designed by Arata Isozaki, the internationally-acclaimed Japanese architect from Tokyo. Isozaki took his architectural theme from the Triumphal Arch of Constantine. Three arches dominate the eastern facade of the building. The centre arch frames the view of the central lake from the main entrance courtyard. The building has two wings, each of four storeys. The administration space of the University spans them, over the arches. If you are facing the building from the courtyard, the Library occupies the right hand wing; the Humanities and Social Sciences School the left. Both the Library and the Humanities wing have a major space or foyer, over two storeys in height, as their main entrance. Both of these spaces are roofed with glass. " -- Orr, B. (1991). John and Alison Kearney were among Bond University's earliest benefactors, providing generous support for educational, cultural and library initiatives. The Kearneys made a lasting contribution to Bond University Library through the donation of a set of original law reports, including The Authorised Law Reports of England. Presented by John Kearney QC, this collection strengthened the Library’s legal holdings at a formative stage in the University’s history, providing access to essential primary legal resources. Their support reflected a broader commitment to advancing legal education at Bond, complementing their sponsorship of the Moot Court and helping to establish the foundations of the University’s law library collection. -- Achievement, No. 13 1988, October
Cathy Tweedie, Library Manager
Cathy began with Bond University as Library Consultant, where she coordinated the purchasing and processing of the Library's opening day collection. Cathy was then appointed Library Manager 1990-1991.
